Redfern
Street, Redfern (corner of Regent Street), circa 1909
The
Redfern Post Office tower features prominently in this view taken in the
mid-afternoon. A heavily-laden tram is heading to La Perouse via Botany.
Note the "Christmas tree" telephone poles, the early electric
street light, and the variety of street level advertising designed to
catch the pedestrian's eye.
Around
the time this photo was taken the suburb hosted many businesses established
by migrants from Syria such as George Dan, Stanton and Aziz Melick and
Anthony and Simon Coorey.
