Tarling Kings Cross: a square mile of hilltop in the heart of Sydney. It never sleeps and is constantly changing. In this series I have tried to pay tribute to Kings Cross as it is today, before it changes tomorrow. I have spent the past two months sketching buildings including the The Yellow House, The Metro and various residential houses. These new works are pen sketches drawn quickly on location. Each takes about an hour to draw and I have to work fast as the people and cars are constantly moving. Drawing quickly in a fast environment gives life to the sketches and I feel it is the best way to capture that raw energy and pace. People stop and talk to me. I met a welder from Garden Island; a jeweller who worked in New York; a real estate agent and a guy who hangs out at the bus stop a lot. Kings Cross is a cultural hub of diversity. Joel Tarling is an artist, illustrator and cartoonist. His work features each month in Sydney City Hub newspaper. He studied Fine Arts at Meadowbank TAFE 1994-96 and Graphic Design at Enmore Design Centre 2001-05. Limited edition photographic prints avaliable fromthe artist. All
